New barns to house Occombe herd
2nd February 2010
Two new barns are going up to house our expanding herd this week - you may have noticed them if you have visited recently.
Occombe Farm is Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust's base for farming some 700 acres of farmland, both for conservation and agriculture. We currently have an 80 cow herd of pedigree ruby reds grazing the bay from Berry Head in the South to Maidencombe in the North.
As those cattle produce more offspring each year we will reach a point where we have 240 cattle to house in the winter months (80 cows, 80 calves and 80 followers), hence the need for the barns. Because we are farming for conservation we obtained a 60% grant under DEFRA's Countryside Stewardship Scheme towards the cost of the barns.
The beef produced is all sold in our farm shop giving local people a chance to buy high quality pedigree local meat helping to care for the countryside around Torbay.
