The novelty of snow soon wears off
12th January 2010
The recent icy weather has kept the farm team very busy feeding and checking all of the stock. They are eating us out of house and home in the cold weather to try and keep warm.
Freezing conditions have caused lots of problems with water pipes and troughs freezing. The heifers at Sharkham point, Brixham, had to be brought back to Occombe last week as their water supply froze and we couldn't resurrect it. Berry Head Ranger, Chris Smallbones, did a great job ferrying 100's of gallons of water to them in containers until we could get through to pick them up and bring them back to the farm.
The covering of snow meant the ewes and lambs couldn't get at the grass so we've been feeding them bales of hay and oats to keep their milk flowing.
Unfortunately the duck's pond froze; we've been breaking the ice daily but at 2" thick we could only break a small portion. Over the weekend the fox took advantage of this and knowing the ducks couldn't escape to open water managed to take four - we still have the other three in a safe place until the ice disappears completely.
