Occombe Farm Lit Up The Night!

Despite every attempt by the weather, our annual fire festival went ahead last weekend as planned. The highlight of the event was a 25' willow effigy set alight with burning arrows!
In fact, the winds had dropped completely by the time the sculpture was lit, and visitors enjoyed a starry and (mostly) dry evening.
The sculpture was created over 6 days leading to the event, by Somerset sculptor Stefan Jennings. Stefan used long stakes of ash to support the stucture, dug deep into the ground. These were surrounded by willow, woven into cylinders to create the legs and piece by piece the rest was added. The figure was then stuffed with straw and sawdust - not an easy task in gale force winds!
The photo above shows the sculpture, surrounded by a circle of fire, as the first burning arrow took hold...
